If the electoral college ever had a valid use, then that validity ended with the invention of long-distance communications. This is a good video explaining why it made some sense when the US Constitution was being written, but not today.

The following video is an examination of all the problems that makes the US electoral college innately undemocratic, allowing rule by a “special” minority of voters.

Would you call a country where as low as 22% of “special class” voters can determine presidential leadership a democracy? What about as low as 17% of these “special” voters electing a leader who is basically the loser in a three-way race?
